Entretien avec Simon Yam Tat Wah

De passage à Paris pour le tournage d'une publicité, Simon Yam a pris le temps de répondre à nos questions... L'occasion de discuter notamment de The Sparrow, sa dernière collaboration avec Johnnie To.


Lorsque j’ai vu The Sparrow, je me suis dit qu’il pouvait faire penser à une comédie musicale…

Oui, en effet, et c’est un film léger, plutôt dans la veine des films que faisait Johnnie To avant PTU, Election 1, Election 2, ces films très dramatiques et relativement lourds, avec beaucoup d’armes, beaucoup de violence… Celui-ci est vraiment léger et a un goût très particulier, un goût agréable. J’aime The Sparrow car c’est un film très différent de ce que Johnnie To et moi avons fait ces derniers temps. C’est quelque chose de nouveau… Il n’y a pas d’armes, pas de violence, mais il y a des sourires. Nous avons essayé de nouvelles choses. On retrouve bien entendu des thèmes traditionnels de l’univers de Johnnie To, comme l’esprit d’équipe de PTU. Un film comme Election 1 raconte l’histoire d’un type qui veut devenir le boss, tandis que The Sparrow raconte l’histoire de quatre amis, moi et trois autres types, qui font équipe. On retrouve donc ce thème récurrent : l’importance de l’esprit d’équipe. Nous avons aussi essayé de montrer les vieux immeubles de Hong Kong. Certains de ces immeubles auront disparu d’ici cinq ans, laissant la place à de nouveaux gratte-ciels. On peut donc dire que Hong Kong est une ville très commerciale. Je me suis souvent dit qu’il fallait montrer ces vieux immeubles. Hong Kong est une ville influencée par l’Est et par l’Ouest. Et, d’un côté, nous avons besoin de ces immeubles anciens, mais aussi des nouveaux. Il fallait montrer le personnage qu’est cette ville. Les films ont une ambiance. The Sparrow est un film léger tandis qu’Election est un film plus lourd, avec des gangsters, avec une atmosphère de film de gangsters. Il faut donc des personnages. Et les films de Johnnie To ont toujours leurs propres personnages. Pour ce film, nous avons fait quelque chose de suant, rendant compte de Hong Kong et de ses habitants. Ainsi, dans cinq ans, nous pourrons regarder ce film comme un témoignage. Nous montrons aux gens que ces bâtiments sont vraiment importants pour nous. Et si, dans quelques années, vous voulez voir les anciens immeubles de Hong Kong… eh bien, regardez The Sparrow ! Je crois que Johnnie To voulait montrer cela. Il y a également l’esprit d’équipe, le fait d’avancer malgré la trahison d’une fille. C’est l’esprit hongkongais. Prenez par exemple le crash financier de 1997, qui a eu un impact énorme, à Singapour comme à Hong Kong, et dans le reste du monde… L’économie se cassait la figure. Pourtant, les gens ont continué à avancer. Aujourd’hui, l’économie est revenue à son meilleur niveau, tout comme l’immobilier. C’est l’esprit de Hong Kong. The Sparrow est un film sur l’esprit d’équipe. Comment continuer à avancer malgré les difficultés ? C’est très important. Je suis très heureux que ce film reflète l’esprit de Hong Kong.

I recently graduated from law school and decided to seek out advice from Asia's Mr.QC on fashion for a newly minted lawyer, among other questions. Check out this small snippet from the interview. The Lady Miz Diva: Mr. Yam, you started your acting career under contract with the Hong Kong television network TVB...
Simon Yam: Ah, it was a long time ago!
LMD: Yes, but so many well-known actors like yourself have come from TVB.
SY: Yes, right, including many famous directors and actors and actresses all come from TVB.
LMD: What did you take away from your time there? What did you learn then that you use today?
SY: Being on time! Actually, I didn't, I learned being on time from my father, who was a policeman. They're always on time. I learned manners from TVB. And how to be energetic; cos in the old days we'd shoot today and then we're dubbing and then we're editing and then the third day, we do this again. This was the routine of before. This was horrible. So when you are sick, you need to do the work. When you have a fever, you can't rest, you need to come back to TV, you need to work. I learned motivation from TVB.
LMD: There was a long period in your career where you were starring in an average of one film per month. How is that even possible?
SY: Actually, it was a movie every two months, but sometimes we would make two or three movies at the same time. There was a period around 1989-1994; normally we'd make 5 movies at the same time. And in a 3 month period, you'd need to finish like 4 movies. For example, January through March, you'd make 4 movies, then for March you'd finish 2 movies, then in May through July you'd work in 3 movies and then you'd finish 2 or 3 movies then 3 more movies through the end of the year.
LMD: No wonder you're so slim. How were you able to transition between the different characters you had to play?
SY: I had no choice, because at that period there were a lot of gangster and triads, they want you to make movies. I don't know if you saw the protests on the street in 1994 against the triads on the news? I had no choice, I needed to work. But the point is I really enjoy my acting; that is the most important thing in every single different kind of role I act. But in that period there were pattern movies, like there is a fight first, then a love story in the middle, then another fight, then again a love story or a brotherhood story then last another fight.
