Hey all,
Well I'm really a big fan of asian movies, and when i was searching for a good site about the movies I just found HK Cinemagic. The site is one of my favourites, and I hope to meet some nice people at this boards smile.gif. I can't speak French, so i'll just stay in this part of it blush.gif .

The last thing I can say is that I'm a really big fan of the actor Chow Yun Fat, and that my nickname is taken from one of his acts.

Well, I think that's it.

See Ya icon13.gif

Ni hao! My interest in kung fu cinema began in the late 70s. I would watch 'Kung Fu Theater' on KTLA, channel 5, weekend afternoons.
Recently, i began collecting DVDs. My collection is about 200 titles deep. My son is convinced this is near record-breaking in size, though I assure him it is rather a rookie collection.
I am delighted to find hkcinemagic. I hope to learn more about the martial arts movies in my collection by becoming a member of this great site.

Ecrit par: pieter53 Vendredi 04 Août 2006 13h45
Welcome on this board!
I must dissappoint your son: 200 is not record breaking, but sure it's quite a lot if you started recently. Further it's not quantity that counts but quality! It's very easy to have a big collection if you have enough money and can buy everything you can get.
You must have watched quite a lot HK-films and perhaps your knowledge can be usefull. I do hope to hear more from you.

Any questions? Don't hesitate to ask!

Pieter

I should clarify that my collection's quantity in no way
reflects its quality. mine is indeed a case of 'buying
whatever I find'. This 'affordable' approach bears witness
to my ignorance. Still, I watch them all and find
measurable enjoyment in all but the most offensive
stinkers.
In short, my collection was easily and quickly obtained, as
you suggested. Perhaps there is a place for my growing
knowledge of shoddy kung fu movies? Hahaa! I would imagine that, if I am active enough, I should find occassion to
share some knowledge. Certainly to warn, if not enlighten,
ne?

Thank you for welcoming me!

I took the time the watch your profile and your site.
I believe in America lots of HK-films are dubbed. I don't like that (that's why I order my DVD's in HK), do you?

You got a lot of nice pictures on your site. I don't like them all, but a lot of them are very, very nice! Some even great! (Since the HK-virus got me, I don't spend much time on photo's anymore, but it has been one of my hobbies too.)

Greetings, Pieter

Welcome ! It's a real pleasure to have an american fan in that forum ! jap.gif

Ecrit par: dokuhaku Lundi 07 Août 2006 12h01
Thank you, Pieter. Thank you, J-L.
Indeed, Pieter, 99% of my kung fu DVDs are dubbed into (British?) English. I agree that this post-production 'translation' process denies the viewer much of the film creator's original vision. An example which comes to mind is the English dub of Zhang Ziyi in 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'. The dubbing conveys an oddly confident woman, contrary to the naivete of the character's young mind. I notice this dub-struction is evident in animation as well.
I would enjoy a source of quality martial arts films, original voice tracks intact, for purchase. I know I can be schooled on this within the HKCinemagic community, ne?

Ecrit par: pieter53 Lundi 07 Août 2006 13h51
I think a lot is lost when you can't understand Chinese and have to read subs, but dubbed versions are even worse.
I buy my DVDs at https://www.dvdynot.com/Movies/Default.aspx?CurrSetting=USD&Language=2.
Their site isn't great and sometimes the 'order status' doesn't show the right information, but till now I never had problems with the orders (about 15 orders).
Looking for more shops? Have a look http://www.hkcinemagic.com/en/info.asp?data=guide-pratique&lid=45.

Hi to everybody,
I am Katalin's friend, so I'm to be blamed for her Lam Ching Ying fanatism. So, basically, thanks to me, you are richer with a wonderful LCY site. wink.gif wink.gif wink.gif

I'm Klara, 37, working as a secretary at a university. I discovered HK films a year ago, thanks to Sammo's Martial Law. Through him I found Ricky Hui and since I'm trying my best to get him the acknowledgement he deserves, as he is constantly underestimated. So is Sammo, actually. My favs are their films, but I love Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao and all the guys in connection with Sammo and the Hui brothers. I happily discuss anything about them.

That was about me jap.gif

Thanks for the wonderful welcome! whistle.gif
pieter, I am happy they have western names, cause I'd be totally lost with Chinese names only. I often say but it's true, it took me a whole week to learn Chow Yun Fat's name... dry.gif

I'll have a look at your biography, but frankly I don't know many things either as Ricky is very difficult to track down. Anything about him. All I could do is to add the info I know to wikipedia, but that's not muche either.

BTW, I noticed a mistake in your pic gallery of Ricky. For Sinful Confession you put in a picture of Michael Hui. But no wonder, he looks very much like Ricky without glasses!!!

Can I have a request as well? Would you change the main photo of Ricky? He has much lovelier photos, you know... biggrin.gif

Thanks again for the warm welcome.

Thanks guys for the corrections. I am so happy you posted pics from Naughty Boys and Generation Gap. I don't have these films yet.
I have Sex Love and Hate but I cannot find Ricky in it at all. Can anyone help?
The main pic is absolutely fine, my fav character is Man Choi so it's a bullseye.
I hope you don't mind me sending so much stuff to keep you busy confused.gif
I think it's better to turbo Ricky up (I like it, Turbo Ricky ) then concentrate on the great man himself, Sammo Hung. kar.gif

As for Ricky's bio, I'd like to suggest to emphasize that in the John Woo films he had absolute leading roles and perhaps add that he is not only an actor but has a singing career too, he released a few albums. Actually, he had a concert this July. whistle.gif

I wouldn't want to be rude or pushy, so if it's too much of my suggestions, feel free to tell me to shut up lipssealed.gif

Well, Ninja in the dragon's den is good but it's not a pure ninja movie, it's betwin comedy kung fu and japanese ninja, FEN doesn't play on the same level, it's more roots, more dirty, bad played, cheap and mad choreographed but it's surely the purest ninja show ever, with cult five elements, a mountain of technics and counter technics, a real ninja "festival" as we said in France. wink.gif

I fully agree with you, all these details are the charm of the film, the "creamy-blinding-red" blood made in Shaw Brothers, the trampolins and that weird girl with that horrible hairdo (Yu Tai Pei, is this her name?). I like the coreographies, Chiang Sheng did a good work there, allied with the talent of Cheng Tien Chi (wub.gif), Chan Wai Man and Lo Meng...all them were great in the fights. The bad things are the fullscreen, the (bad)english dubbing and the scenes that were kicked off icon4.gif

Are those the only two?

Then you must see Dance of the drunken master (a.k.a. Drunken master II). It's great!
A pity the the Soulblade DVD-edition of this one doesn't have the right aspect ratio.

My life has changed completely as I'm living in Beijing, China. smile.gif Yes, I'm really living here and for already more than 6 months, I'm studying Chinese here and doing some part-time jobs. No idea of when I go back to my country or if I will.

Hi, Im new to this game so Id thought id say hi

My love for Asian films stems from my youth, my grand parents lived in HK for a bit abnd brought a load of chop scoky style films back over as well as some utterly bizarrely Japenese kids stuff Revenge of the Defenders (English dub).

Started with Enter the Dragon, and worked from there.

Much love for Jackie Chan, Chow Yun Fat, John Woo and Jet Li among others.

Also like Anime, and many films from Korea and Japan.

Anyways hi all

Hello everyone. This is my first post, though I've been a fan of the database for many years. biggrin.gif

I love all Asian films, but most especially Hong Kong action movies. Other than the obvious- Shaw Brothers classics, the films of Sammo, Jackie, Biao, Jet, Donnie, et, I'm also a fan of chanbara films and love Sonny Chiba.

I'm a film fanatic, martial arts practitioner, and I am an artist. In fact, my art indirectly led me here. I didn't even know there was a forum here until one of the guys that runs it told me. He has bought my artwork, and suggested that I let members of this forum know about it. If you're interested in seeing my art prints of Asian cinema then please go to eBay and look me up as the seller "Nunchakubeast" or do a search for FIVE VENOMS. My art will definitely show up. Hope you like my work.

Hello everyone.

My name is Raymond. I live in northern California, the Bay Area.

I am the owner and creator of the website 'ShaolinChamber36.com'.

My love for Asian films is mostly geared towards those CLASSIC kung fu movies, and while I have no problem watching any movie in it's original language with subtitles, I especially love those old school dubs!

I recently began a new venture, 36 Styles, t-shirts based on classic kung fu movies.

I work a lot on my website, spend a lot of time with my family, and love playing the latest version of Call of Duty, which is currently Black Ops. I LOVE playing Zombies on COD as well.

I just wanted to say Hello to everyone here, and hope everyone is doing well, and continue to do so.

Buddha Bless You.

Hey HKC Fans,

My name is Jan Lucanus. I'm a life-long, 2nd generation martial artist/Shaw Brothers geek/comic book fan, and my team and I publish "JFH: Justice For Hire", the most downloaded martial arts comic series. We've created several short films and videos that tie into the comic book narrative, and our latest film is our biggest yet, "JFH: Retribution Task Force". The film stars John Machado (David Mamet's "Redbelt"), Ahmed Best ("Star Wars"), Mercer Boffey ("Rake"), Sean Brosnan ("Generation Kill"), pro fighter Maximillion Chen (son of the Living Treasure of China, Grandmaster William C. C. Chen), and more. Fight scenes coordinated by stunt veteran Mike Mukatis (“Transformers 4”). Please check it out and subscribe, and you'll find a link to a free comic book download in the description. Thanks!
