Over 50 thousand spectators and 1200 accreditations:
a record sum for the eleventh edition !
The Japanese masterpiece, Departures, after its Oscar win, triumphs again with the 2009 Audience Award. On the podium for second place stands the irresistible comedy from South Korea, Scandal Makers, holding its International Premiere at FEFF 11.

UDINE – It’s time to add up the sums for Far East Film 2009. And if we’re talking about a record edition, by now, this has become an habitual occurrence, almost automatic, but to find ourselves still talking about this after eleven years is truly something else: it is an authentic record within a record, both in terms of pure success, as well as in terms of project and cultural continuity.
The figures? As follows: the Udinese Festival this year, has exceeded its threshold of 50 thousand spectators, also bringing together the greatest number of applicants ever, to participate in the event: 1200 present, from over ten different countries (from the United States to the Czech Republic), without forgetting, of course, the 200 plus journalists and the 30 representatives from international festivals (it is also worth noting that the bookshop this year sold more than 1500 items, between books and DVDs, while the official site www.fareastfilm.com received 25 thousand visitors, during the nine days alone).
A record edition indeed, and not only for all the greatest hits contained within the programme, composed entirely of premieres (1 World Premiere, 20 International, 14 European and 21 Italian), but also for the excellent quality of the overall programme itself, fully certified by names and titles already registered in the golden book of new Asian cinema! A cinema that, according to the votes for the Audience Award, has seen Japan triumph with Departures (whilst waving the flags for South Korea and Indonesia, in second and third place respectively, was the irresistible comedy Scandal Makers, screened as an international premiere, and the poetic melodrama The Rainbow Troops). The jury composed of our particiapnts enrolled as Black Dragons, also voted for Departures as their number one film, fresh from its Oscar victory as Best Foreign Film, whereas the readers of Mymovies.it, whom expressed their preferences by voting directly on-line, chose as their favourite the Japanese road movie One Million Yen Girl directed by young female director, Tanada Yuki. Succeeding in occupying a front row seat within the group of major international cinematic events, Far East Film is a unique festival, distant from the mechanisms of power and strengthened by its single and clear vocation: passion for Oriental culture as well as for popular culture in general. A real and proper celebration of cinema that does not establish hierarchies between pop visions and those of the elite, between small underground works and sumptuous mainstream
productions: it rotates around 360° degrees and finds the support of an extremely motivated and faithful public, composed of journalists, critics, film students, experts, work delegates and above all, of people that have a profound love for the cinematic dreams from the lands of the Far East.
An healthy injection of oxygen for the public image of Udine, once again the envied and admired stronghold of Asian cinema in the West. And in this perspective, it becomes ever clearer that Far East Film is not only a festival created by the Centro Espressioni Cinematografiche. For the sum of its characteristics, its dimensions, the partners involved, its popularity, its reputation and international respect, it is an international cultural event (Italian and European) that benefits local commerce, just like an economical event (a business).
The Far East Film Festival has given recognition in the Orient, to Friuli and to Italy, a debt that could be repaid by the creation of a new synergy, uniting C.E.C. to the Institutions (of the state, the region and the local government) and to the economic realities (Industrial Associations, Chambers of Commerce and the business world). Altogether, solidly reunited around a single work table, to design the strategies for the future and to make sure that Far East Film is no longer a private miracle that renews itself every year with very little resources, but an event that firmly determines and manages its own destiny, making the most of all its potential…
And meanwhile, as we already start planning our twelve edition, scheduled to take place from the 23rd April to the 1st May 2010, Far East Film makes a date with the next Venice Film Festival, where two films within the Midnight screenings section
