A voir.

British distributors Mediumrare Entertainment have officially announced that they will release on Blu-ray Lam Nai-Choi's film Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky (1991), starring Fan Siu-Wong, Gloria Yip Wan-Yee, Oshima Yukari, Frankie Chan Chi-Leung, and Tamba Tetsuro. The release will be available for purchase on July 27.
Synopsis: Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky is set in an alternative universe in the year 2001. After killing the drug dealer responsible for his girlfriend's death, Ricky (Fan Siu-Wong) finds himself banged up in a prison ruled by a corrupt warden and a group of super-mercenaries known as the Gang of Four.
Trained in an especially deadly form of martial arts, and possessing super-human strength making him virtually indestructible, Ricky responds to the bullying of various inmates, prison guards and the Gang of Four in the only way he knows how…
Cue disembowelment, decapitation, dismemberment, flaying, manual organ removal, exploding bodies, crushed heads, exposed brains, popping eyeballs, human mincing (and we're not talking about adopting dandyish affectations here!), one jaw-dropping mother of a monster and the goriest climax you will ever see!
Special Features: Newly restored High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) Interview with leading man Fan Siu-Wong Feature-length audio commentary with Hong Kong Stuntman Jude Power and critic Miles Wood Martial Arts Showcase with Fan Siu-Wong Trailer Archive 24-Page Collector's Booklet Reversible sleeve with newly created artwork on both sides Original Stereo 2.0 and 5.1 audio Optional English SDH subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing

I recently read some very good news that may change the game for Hong Kong classics in HD. I couldn't find it posted anywhere here, so here goes:
L'Immagine Ritrovata, a very competent Italian film lab, has just opened a new film restoration facility in... Hong Kong. Yes, in HK! It seems that HK, China and Taiwan are finally taking seriously the preservation of their film heritage and are willing to invest big money to do it right. Over the past few years, they asked the Italian lab to do quite a number of restorations and apparently the workload was such that opening a new lab in HK was deemed the best solution.
The lab will be situated in the Milkyway studio and will continue the work that the Italian lab had already started. So far the Italians have completed the restoration of several movies, including King Hu's Dragon Inn and A Touch of Zen (both in 4K and presented at Cannes in 2014 and 2015) and... wait for iiiit... John Woo's A Better Tomorrow (shown recently at the Shanghai film festival) !!!!!! They also completed In the Heat of the Sun and Comrades, Almost a Love Story (both were shown in Venice in 2013).
Apparently two of their major clients are Fortune Star and Orange Sky Golden Harvest, two of the biggest right-holders in HK. Their efforts won't stop at HK, Chinese or Taiwanese cinema, but will extend to the Philippines and probably to other South-East Asian countries (Malaysia perhaps). It's also worth mentioning that the lab will be helmed by Bede Cheng, who used to work for the Hong Kong Film Archive and the Hong Kong International Film Festival, so I'm guessing it's in good hands.
I don't know about you, but I'm very excited about this. I saw Touch of Zen in 4K yesterday and the quality was beyond my wildest expectations. Seriously for a film that has never once had a proper video release, I expected a very flawed restoration where every choice was a compromise, but here... either the film elements were as damaged as previous video incarnations led us to believe and I witnessed a miracle or all previous distributors of this film were incompetent fools. Anyway, watching A Touch of Zen in these condition, I started to think of how great it would be to rediscover all the Tsui Hark classics in 4K. Granted, they'll never look like smooth HD, but they're not supposed to. Seeing them restored in a state that's as close to the original film texture as possible, that's what it's all about... and it looks like a damn close possibility!
I'll see Dragon Inn in a few weeks and post back here but, something tells me it'll blow my mind too.
If you have any further info on the matter or if you just want to talk about the movies you'd like to see restored, please post below. And if you want to bitch about the fact that this means you'll have to buy all these movies again, that's okay too wink.gif
In the meantime, here are my sources: filmbiz.asia & TwitchFilm
PS: There's a rumor that the new UK Blu Ray of Story of Ricky was made from a restoration done by L'Immagine Ritrovata. While there is no doubt that they used a newer master (honestly, the master under that DNR layer looks gorgeous), I haven't been able to find any single evidence that L'immagine Ritrovata was behind the restoration. Whether the UK distributor was too thick-headed to release the master as it was and lathered it up with DNR after the fact or the HK rights-holder put the DNR on their own master, I don't know.
Confirmed restorations *:
[li]Hong Kong: [li]A Better Tomorrow (John Woo, 1986 - 4K, 2015, supervised by cinematographer Horace Wong) [li]Comrades, Almost a Love Story (Peter Chan, 1996 - ?K, 2012, supervised by director Peter Chan) [li]Confucius (Fei Mu, 1940 - ?K, 2008) [li]Way of the Dragon (Bruce Lee, 1972)[/li] [li]Taiwan: [li]A Touch of Zen (King Hu, 1971 - 4K, 2015, supervised by cinematographer Hui-ying Hua) [li]Dragon Inn (King Hu, 1967 - 4K, 2014, supervised by cinematographer Hui-ying Hua)[/li] [li]China: [li]Stage Sisters (Xie Jin, 1964 - 4K, 2014) [li]In the Heat of the Sun (Jiang Wen, 1994 - ?K, 2012, supervised by director Jiang Wen)[/li] [li]Philippines: [li]Manila in the Claws of Light (Lino Brocka, 1975 - 4K, 2013) [li]Insiang (Lino Brocka, 1976 - ?K, 2015)[/li]
* Any restoration dated before 2015 has been done in Bologna, Italy. For those from 2015, it is unclear whether they are from the Italian lab or the new HK one.
