The queen of Canto-pop lets LI EE KEE in on her upcoming Sammi vs Sammi 04 Concert at Genting Highlands, in a telephone interview from Hong Kong.
AFTER 14 years in show business, Sammi Cheng has heard it all, from rumoured love affairs with her leading men to her supposed fading popularity.
Recently, her position as the queen of Canto-pop was again called into question. Several Hong Kong dailies reported that tickets to her upcoming concerts in the former British colony were not selling well.
Unfazed, Cheng in a telephone interview from Hong Kong last Friday said that regardless of the reports, she is “working hard to deliver a good performance.”
Hogn Kong singer Sammi Cheng appearing at a Hong Kong hotel to promote her upcoming concert in the former British island colony in September. She will be coming to Malaysia for a concert next month.
With filming for Zei Gong Zei Po (In the Nick of Love), a romantic comedy with Andy Lau completed, Cheng is focusing her energy on the concerts.
Following her seven-night shows in Hong Kong during the July 22 to 31 period, Cheng will perform at Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands, on Aug 13 and 14. She will also be staging a concert in Singapore on Aug 27.
“I usually take a break in August because of my birthday (on Aug 19). But this year I have my concerts. And I want to use the time to brush up on my Mandarin in preparation for my new movie, Chang Hen Ge (Song of Misery),” she explained in Cantonese.
It has been three years since Cheng staged a concert in Hong Kong. On what she thinks of artistes who hold annual concerts to make a quick buck, Cheng said there aren’t many such singers.
She said that there is a demand for concerts due to the size of Hong Kong and its entertainment industry. “And it is part of our culture.”
While Malaysia is not exactly a hotbed for concerts, when one rolls into town, Malaysians can be counted on to show their support.
So what can we expect from Cheng’s two-night concerts? According to the 32-year-old, it will not be much different from her other performances as she intends to bring the Hong Kong production to Malaysia.
Costume wise, Cheng who is known for her avant-garde style, assured it would meet with local requirements.
“I will not wear anything revealing just to be sexy. What is important is that the clothes make me look beautiful and feel confident.”
In terms of song selection, Cheng may include more Mandarin tunes to cater to Malaysian fans.
What about guest artistes? In Hong Kong, it is a norm to invite different singers to perform every night. Sam Hui’s recent sold-out concerts saw numerous guest artistes.
“I think Hui had too many,” Cheng laughed. “But he symbolises the spirit of Hong Kong folk. I have a different approach and I hope to give fans a fresh feeling.”
Will F4 members Jerry Yan and Vic Zhou be her guest artistes? Both had worked with Cheng – Yan on the romantic comedy, Magic Kitchen, and Zhou on an advertisement, which sparked rumours that the two were dating.
“Every one keeps speculating,” she chuckled. “I do not want to reveal too much.”
Cheng has not decided on who will perform with her in Malaysia but she is hopeful of having one.
“Guest artistes are a bonus for fans. I hope aside from watching me, fans can also watch performances by other artistes.”
