Lot of people already discovered that not all the DVD's contain the complete movie. Especially dubbed movies are notorius. Sometimes they even changed parts of the story. If possible, look for HK-releases!

Found parts missing on the dubbed versions or English/American releases of:
- Meltdown / High risk (Jet Li)
- The Legend 1 & 2 / Fong Sai Yuk 1 & 2 (Jet Li)
- Twin warrioirs / The tai chi master (Jet Li)
- Legend of the red dragon / The new legend of Shaolin (Jet Li)
- Millionaire's express (Sammo Hung)
- Accidental spy (Jackie Chan)
- Shaolin soccer (Stephen CHow) 113 min. org. length.

Please give your reaction if you know more, or when you know the original (theatrical) running time!

In The Database, you can't find that ?

For exemple : Legend of the red dragon / The new legend of Shaolin :
http://www.hkcinemagic.com/en/movie.asp?id=138

'94 min.
Alt. Runtime :
- 83 : The runningtime of the dubbed version is about 83 minutes, the HK version runs about 94 min.'

We should report different running times by using 'error report' on the DB sites, but there's a little problem about that. A difference of about 5% can caused by a change in frame-rate and differences between scenes caused by a different translation can't be reported that way.

I should have been more clear in my first post.

Meltdown (dubbed) runs 100, High Risk (HK Eng.subt.) 101 min. At least one shot is missing. Some parts of the dialogs are different.

Fong Sai Yuk 1 (HK eng.subt.) is 14 min longer than The Legend 1. Songs are missing, Parts of the dialog are completly different, Scenes are missing.

Fong Sai Yuk 2 (HK eng.subt.) is 5 min. longer than The Legend 2. Some small parts of the dialog are not the same, can't recall what was missing.

The New Legend of Shaolin (HK eng.subt.) is 11 minutes longer than Legend of the Red Dragon. Parts of the dialog are differrent, some important scene's are missing.

The Tai Chi Master runs 2 min. longer than Twin Warrioirs. The music is different (even on the credits there's an other name), some scene's missing.

On Millionaire's Express (HKL) I can't find a scene with women against prostitution.

Heard that there's a difference between releases of Accidental Spy of about 25 min.

The same is said about Shaolin soccer.

If there's somebody who has more information on these titles, please inform me by personal mail, so I can edit the information in this post.

We also may want to be careful with the running time on the PAL and NTSC format...

Warrior from Shaolin / Carry on Wise guy .
On the dubbed Tai Seng edition there are some scenes missing (for instance: one with Cheung Hei and one complete fight). In most of the fights small parts are missing. Accoording to the box it runs about 90 min.
The two disc VCD of Ocean Shore misses the brothel scene so you won't see Lam Kin Ming, altough her name is on the box. The first disk has no subs. It has Cantonese on the left and Mandarin on the right sound-channel. On the second disk Mandarin is on the left, Cantonese on the right. On the second disk, the movie has hard to read chinese and english burnt-in subs and a strange color. Accoording to Windows media player it runs about 85 min.
On both, the movie is cropped and doesn't have the right aspect ratio. (I hope, you can understand my English!)

36 Deadly styles / Shadow boxin'
The Mei Ah DVD runs about 91 min, the dubbed Vengeance video DVD about 87 min, but there are no important parts missing. The dubbing of the Vengeance video is awful and the picture quality isn't as good as on the Mei Ah DVD. The English subs on the Mei Ah are not always in correct English.
By the way: the plot story on both boxes gives you a wrong idea about the main story of the movie.

Dragon's claws
The dubbed Prism Leisure DVD runs about 86 min. Picture quality is good, but the movie is cropped to fit 3:4. Parts of the fightscenes and at least one complete scene are missing.
The Mei Ah DVD runs 91 min., wide screen. The quality of the picture varies. The English subtitles are not always in correct English.

Iron Fisted Monk
Had a topic on the HKMDB forum on the translation of the title, here's the most important part of it:
QUOTE

The title is: 'SanTe', Buddhist monk, and 'Chong Mi Liu' or Buddhist Monk San Te and Chong Mi Liu. (Lot of Chinese movies have titles with only one or two names.)
Chan Sing plays San Te, Hung Kam Bo plays Ching Mi Liu.

That makes the pinyin:
San1 De2 He2 Sang4 Yu3 Chong1 Mi3 Liu4

San Te and Chong Mi Liu are historical figures
Chong means: to pound grain.
Mi means: (husked) rice.
Liu means: six.
In English they call him: Rice-miller-six.
It's said that he was one of the "Ten Tigers of Kwantung'.
San Te means three virtues. A suitable name for a monk.

San Te and Chong Mi Liu (played by Gordon Liu Chia Hui and Wong Yu) are together again in the 36th chamber of Shaolin.

If you've seen the Fortune Star DVD it's clear why Fung Hak On is nicknamed 'The Rapist'. The Hong Kong Legend DVD contains a purified version even in the 'original' theatrical trailer (available extra on both DVD's) parts are missing. On the HKL release there are two or three other scene's not complete and sometimes the dialog is changed (purified). Both DVD's run about 88 minutes, but I can't remember there was something extra on the HKL-version, so the FS release must run faster (tought I noticed that in the final showdown).
The picture quality of FS release isn't as good as on the HKL release, but still acceptable, the English subtitles are full of Ch-english and sometimes the simplified chinese subtitles are not the text that is spoken on the Mandarin soundtrack. Can't say how it is with Traditional and Cantonese.

Magnificent butcher
This film has two chinese titles.
The first is: Lam Sai Wing (Lin Shi Rong) the name of Sammo Hung in this film. A historical figure who was indeed one of the pupils of Wong Fei Hung.
The second is: Yan Je Mou Dik (ren zhe wu di) which can be translated with a righteous person doesn't have enemies or: a righteous person is invincible. This is the text that Kwan Tak Hing draws on the paper while fighting with Lee Hoi San.

About the DVD's. Got a Hong Kong Legend and a Fortune Star release. By the way; the slip covers of the Fortune star DVD's can often be turned inside out! Both DVD's run a bout 105 minutes. The picture quality of the HKL release is better and so is the translation to the english subtitles. Some small parts of at least four scenes are missing and (as far as I can remeber) on one or two occasions the music is different. The picture quality of the Fortune star release is quite good. It has a Cantonese and Mandarin soundtrack and English, Traditional and Simplified Chinese subtitles.

It's about 90 films ago that I watched this one, so it's hard to remember. As far as I can recall, it's like I said: there are only small parts missing. I got the impression that, if a part of the copy can't be remastered to the quality HKL wants, they simply skip it. A thing that happened on Snake in the Eagle's shadow too.
I will keep your message in mind and if I know more, I will tell you.

I've got the Mei Ah remaster of SITES on order. It'll be interesting for me to see the extra bits+ hear it in Cantonese for the first time!

Please note that, although their picture quality is very good, in some films of Celestial releases scene's are cut (sometimes just seconds and often squirting blood) as I found out watching One-armed swordsman and the New one-armed swordsman. Also, soundtracks are altered, The Chinese Boxer has it's original musical soundtrack on VCD only whilst the DVD version has a new soundtrack with horrible musik. The music on the DVD version of New one-armed swordsman is'nt original also ( I don't know about the VCD release) SB.gif

You know, I get quite angry!
Selling you a product, that's incomplete.
To me it's like buying a new car and when you have it, you'll find that a wheel is missing!

By the way: isn't there a law that says that it is not allowed to molest, distroy, disfigure or how do you call it, art?

Mr Vampire.
Just watched the Fortune star release and watched the HKL release a year ago. On the HKL release at least two small parts are missing and sometimes the dialogue is changed. The Fortune star release is of good quality.

Last Hero in China (Jet Li).
I got a World Wide Cinema release with Dutch subtitles and an Univere Laser Disk release with bunt-in Chinese and English subs.
On the WWC release some small parts are missing, but on the ULD the complete song of the whores next door is missing! On the ULD the subs are sometimes hard to read and the picture quality isn't as good as the WWC release.

Once upon a time in China 3.
I got the HKL and Fortune Star/ Deltamac release.
There's not much difference between those. The HKL is of better quality and has some extras, but of some scenes (less important) small parts are missing and it doesn't have a Mandarin soundtrack nor Chinese subs.
On some parts the story which is told by the English subs differs.

Tai Chi 2
About the same story for Tai Chi 2 (Modern DVD release) and "The Tai Chi Boxer" (HKL).
The English subs of the HKversion are not as good as those on the HKL release.

Who Am I (Jackie Chan).
I got a Universe Laser & Video edition that runs 120 min. and a Bridge entertainment edition that only runs 103 min.
No essential parts are missing, but a lot of scene's are just a bit shorter. On one or two occasions you will miss some information, which make it more difficult to understand the story.
The ULV edition is in Cantonese and Mandarin, with English and Chinese subs.
The BE edition is in English only.
Picture and sound of both are good.
