Yao Ming eying film business

Updated: 2012-01-31 20:40

(Xinhua)

SHANGHAI - The retired Chinese basketball superstar Yao Ming has been looking for business opportunities in the film industry, but has not entered it yet, Yao's agent said Tuesday, responding to media's reports claiming that Yao will set up a film finance fund.
Foreign media report that Jay Cohen, an American film producer, is setting up a film finance fund with Yao Ming, which has caught the attention of China's media and public.
"Yao Ming and our team has not joined or set up any such organizations as the film finance fund," Yao's agent Zhang Mingji told Xinhua, adding that they are open to such kind of business, and are looking for good investment opportunities.
Zhang said, Jay Cohen is a friend of Yao and Yao's team and they have made some discussions on investing in the film industry, but no action has been taken yet.
He went on saying that Yao is currently busy with his study and works in the Shanghai Sharks,  a Chinese basketball team, and he has no plan to go to the United States to negotiate investing in the film industry.
Yao, 31, announced his retirement on July 20 last year from the National Basketball Association's Houston Rockets, the US team who made him a global star, and from the Chinese national team five days later.
Since his retirement, Yao has been back to school studying for a university degree in business management and helping manage the Shanghai Sharks.
In November, he set up a company to sell his own brand of wine, and he sold the first bottle for 150,000 yuan ($23,766) at a charity auction.
Yao is China's first global sports superstar with a personal brand valued at more than $1 billion.

Makiyo, friend charged with assaulting driver

SHAMEFUL:The singer-actress and her Japanese friend were charged over an incident in which they allegedly kicked and hit a Taipei taxi driver while they were drunk

By Shelley Shan and Mo Yan-chih  /  Staff Reporters

The Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office yesterday wrapped up its investigation into a case involving singer-actress Makiyo and her friend Takateru Tomoyori, charging both with assault and asking for four and six years imprisonment respectively over the alleged beating of a taxi driver last week.

The prosecution said it decided to charge Makiyo for assault after reviewing footage from a dashboard camera provided by another taxi driver, which prosecutors said showed that the actress kicking the driver, surnamed Lin (林).

Actresses Yaz and Vanessa, who were in the car, have been charged with providing false testimony.

The incident is believed to have followed the refusal by Tomoyori to fasten his seatbelt, whereupon Lin was allegedly kicked several times by Tomoyori. Lin sustained severe injuries and was hospitalized.

Earlier in the day, a group of about 20 members of the National Taxi Drivers Union submitted a protest letter to the Interchange Association, Japan, in Taipei, asking the association, which serves as the de facto embassy in the absence of official diplomatic ties, to apologize to the nation “for the tensions” caused by the dispute.

Union chief of staff Kuo Ya-hsiung (郭雅雄) said the incident had dragged on for so long and that none of the alleged perpetrators were telling the truth.
“We want dignity! We want the truth!” the protesters shouted, holding banners that said: “Find the truth” and “Violent Japanese drinkers not welcome.gif in Taiwan.”

Although Lin’s case was an isolated incident, Japan’s representative association should say something about a Japanese national beating up a Taiwanese in his own country, said Cheng Chuan-yi (鄭釧義), an executive committee member of the taxi drivers’ association.

“They [the association] should apologize to Taiwanese and Mr Lin to help ease tensions between the two countries [caused by the incident],” Kuo said.
The association sent a representative to accept the protest letter.

In an interview with the Taipei Times, Kuo thanked the media for speaking for the victim and for allowing justice to prevail.
“The media have helped highlight the plight facing the nation’s taxi drivers,” he said.

Lawyer Yu Chun-ru (余俊儒), who was retained by the union to help Lin in the case, said the driver had indicated he would forgive the young people if they truly repented for what they did and told the truth.

People make mistakes and it is one’s attitude after making a mistake that counts, he said.

Since the controversy emerged, Kuo said several taxi drivers had come forward and said they had had Makiyo as a passenger before, adding that they had complained about her behavior. So far, none of the alleged perpetrators have offered compensation to the victim.

“Some things, like dignity, simply cannot be bought with money,” Kuo said.
Several well-known people, including former leader of the Bamboo Union gang “White Wolf” Chang An-lo (張安樂) — who has made public statements about the affair — and Yulon Motor (裕隆汽車) chairman Kenneth Yen (嚴凱泰), have indicated their intent to donate money to Lin.

Chang, a wanted fugitive who has fled to China, is the founder of the China Unification Promotion Party. One taxi association, the Grand Chinese Taxi Association, is affiliated with the party.

His involvement in the matter in Taipei appears to have been made to please China and spark anti-Japanese sentiment.

Meanwhile, the Taipei City Police Department removed two police officials from their posts over the local divisions’ “poor handling” of the evidence in the case.
The department acknowledged its failure to include a video clip in the evidence package given to prosecutors on Friday last week.

The video clip, taken by a taxi driver using his car camcorder, showed clear images of Makiyo shouting at the taxi driver and kicking him several times before being stopped by Tomoyori.

The police department did not present the video clip to the prosecutors until the prosecutors saw the footage on TV on Wednesday and demanded the tape from the department.

Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin (郝龍斌) said the head of the Police Department, Huang Sheng-yong (黃昇勇), on Thursday afternoon presented a report on its handling of evidence and the list of personnel to be given punishments for negligence.

Hau also said he instructed the chief to re-examine the list and consider giving more severe punishments, if necessary.

Head of the department’s Sanchangli police station, Yang Kuo-chang (楊國昌), and director of Inspection Division of Xinyi precinct, Su Je-ping (蘇哲平), were removed from their posts.

Police officers who had handled the piece of evidence were also given demerits, according to the list.

“There was administrative negligence in the procedures relating to presenting evidence to the prosecutors, and I think those who are responsible for the mistakes should be punished,” Hau said.

Asked to comment on the singer-actress’ character, some sources within the Japanese community in Taipei said that Makiyo, who is half-Japanese, was not a well-behaved student when she attended the Taipei Japanese School.

Many parents were really troubled by some of her behavior, the source said, such as kissing her boyfriends in school.

The source also used the term “childish” to describe the actions taken by Makiyo and Tomoyori.

“Being drunk should not be used as an excuse,” the source said, referring to Makiyo. “We are embarrassed by Tomoyori’s chauvinistic behavior as well; he is really the shame of Japan.”

Chinese actress wins prestigious Italian film award

Xinhua, May 5, 2012

Chinese actress Zhao Tao 趙濤 won the best actress prize Friday at Italy's David di Donatello 2012 Awards for her leading role in the movie "Io sono Li"(I am Li).

This was the first time ever that the prestigious Italian award was given to a Chinese national.

"The movie was a perfect example of joint cinematic efforts by Italians and Chinese," Zhao said when she was announced the winner, out of five actresses nominated for the award.

A co-production by Italy and France and directed by the Italian Andrea Segre, "Io sono Li" is a love story between a Chinese immigrant who works as a barmaid in the Venice lagoon town of Chioggia, and a local fisherman nicknamed "The Poet."

"I think the movie has succeed in showing how people from two different cultures learn from each other at a profound level," Zhao told Xinhua.

In fact, promoting understanding between different cultures was Segre's aim all along, and the director said he has learned a lot about Chinese culture while making the movie.

"I think cinema must have the honor and duty to describe the situation of our country, and immigration is an important phenomenon marking a big change in Italy," he told Xinhua.

"In recent years, large numbers of immigrants have entered Italy, and now people with a variety of different cultural backgrounds live together here," Segre said.

While working on the movie, Segre realized that Italy's Chinese communities are much more eager to understand local society than the media claims, the director said. He also said that telling the personal stories of immigrants lets others better understand their feelings.

In 2011, "Io sono Li" was screened in the Venice Days section of the 68th Venice International Film Festival.

The fact that an European award was granted for the first time to an Asian actress showed Zhao's "increasingly outstanding artistic level," Marco Muller, artistic director of the Venice Film Festival, told Xinhua.

Born in Taiyuan, the capital of China's Shanxi province, Zhao studied classical Chinese dance when she was a child. In 1996, she enrolled in the folk dance department at Beijing Dance Academy.

The annual David di Donatello Awards, first given in Rome in 1955, honor the best Italian and foreign films.

Il devait ensuite faire un remake de La Jeunesse de la bête 野獣の青春 (1963) de Seijun Suzuki, re-titré "Les jours de la bête" (野獸之日).

L'actrice chinoise Zhang Ziyi contre-attaque.

Socialite Justin Lee wanted for alleged rape, filming trysts

By Ku Ming-hung and Jake Chung

Prosecutors on Wednesday issued a wanted notice for socialite Justin Lee (李宗瑞) for allegedly raping a woman and filming bedroom trysts with many showbiz performers, models and A-list film actresses, allegedly against their will or without their knowledge.
The case was first opened in July last year, when twin sisters said that the elder sister had been drugged and raped by Lee, who allegedly also filmed the entire process.
According to the alleged victim, Lee’s most common method for raping women was to drink a woman under the table, then offer to drive her home. After the woman got into his car, he would drive her back to his house in Taipei’s upscale Xinyi District (信義) and give them a glass of water that was drugged, she said.
Lee would then rape the woman and film the entire process and after the woman woke up, he would play innocent and say the woman raped him, the alleged victim said.
Lee, son of Yuanta Financial Holding Co board member Lee Yueh-tsang (李岳蒼), is well known because of his rich family and is often seen coming and going from fashion-industry parties and nightclubs. According to people who know Justin Lee, his lavish spending habits and smooth tongue guarantees that he is never seen without women, though he seems to favor models, with Maggie Wu (吳亞馨), Ruru Lin (林葦茹) and Gina Lin (林利霏) reported to be ex-girlfriends.
Friends of Justin Lee’s were reported by local media as saying that they thought he simply liked to show off his affluence and to party, and did not think he was someone who would rape women and record it on film.
After the case was first reported, police summoned Justin Lee for questioning, but he was released because of what they said was insufficient evidence. However, police later discovered on the hard-drive of his computer — which had been confiscated as evidence — multiple videos of him having sex with women.
The Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office on Wednesday issued a wanted notice for Justin Lee after discovering that he had vacated his original residence and could not be contacted. The prosecutors said they had also begun calling in those in the videos for questioning.
When reached for comments on the rumors the media have reported on the case, Yuanta spokesperson Chuan Yu-de (莊有德) on Wednesday said: “[Justin] Lee is not a member of the company and we have nothing to say on the matter.”
Wu, Ruru Lin and Gina Lin have all issued statements through their agencies that they were not involved, did not know Justin Lee or had not been in touch with him for a long time.
The models’ agencies said they hoped the media would base their reports on facts, not rumors.

Celeb sex scandal intensifies as "Taiwan's Edison Chen" surrenders to authorities

Posted: 24 August 2012 1950 hrs

TAIPEI: Justin Lee, the son of a wealthy Taiwan businessman, surrendered to Taiwan authorities on Thursday; 23 days after the Taiwan police issued a warrant for his arrest.

The police had put him on the wanted list after he repeatedly failed to turn up for questioning over allegations that he had drugged, raped and secretly took racy photos as well as videos of about 60 women, including a number of models and celebrities, reported Taiwan media.

Dressed in a T-shirt and jeans, the 27-year-old walked into the Taipei District Prosecutors' Office on Thursday night, and later told authorities that he had been staying at a female friend's home these past days.

Lee said he decided to turn himself in after he heard that the police have been questioning his friends and family members.

However, he denied the allegations against him and insisted that everything which transpired had happened between consenting adults.

Speculation has been rife over which celebrities and models were involved in the scandal, after a few of the racy photos were published by Taiwan tabloids in recent weeks.

Taiwan authorities have been investigating ten police officers over how the photos, which are part of a larger collection of footage and photographs recovered from Lee's apartment by the police, made their way into the pages of the tabloids.

Lee's collection of racy photos and footage has become highly sought-after among Taiwan netizens, with many of them labelling Lee as "Taiwan's Edison Chen".

No new photos have surfaced so far.

Taiwan model-actress Maggie Wu has also been embroiled in the case, after a Taiwan news programme reported that she had admitted to being one of the women Lee photographed, citing a SMS they claim Wu had sent, but Wu later said she had never sent such an SMS to the media.

QUOTE
AUG 28, 2012:
WONG KAR WAI TO BE JURY PRESIDENT OF BERLINALE 2013

Chinese director Wong Kar Wai will be the Jury President of the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival.

The director, who has won many international awards, is one of the most important representatives of world cinema. Wong Kar Wai’s unique and extraordinary style has inspired countless filmmakers and made him a cult figure of contemporary auteur cinema.

Wong Kar Wai was born in Shanghai and grew up in Hong Kong. He made his directorial debut in 1988 with As Tears Go By. His work Days of Being Wild, which screened in the Berlinale Forum in 1991, was followed in 1994 by Chungking Express, the film with which Wong Kar Wai achieved his international breakthrough. He again demonstrated his remarkable talent in his Berlinale contribution Fallen Angels (Forum,1996). In 1997 he won the Award for Best Director in Cannes for Happy Together. He captivated still another generation of European moviegoers with the nostalgic love story In the Mood for Love (2000), which received a César in 2001, as well as with his next film, 2046, which won a European Film Award for Best Non-European Film in 2004. My Blueberry Nights (2007) was the first film that Wong Kar Wai shot in the USA and cast with Hollywood stars.

Wong Kar Wai is currently working on The Grandmasters, which features Tony Leung and Ziyi Zhang in the leads.

“Wong Kar Wai is one of the most celebrated filmmakers of our time. His distinctive signature and the poetry of his works have fascinated all of us. For him to become jury president, is a wish come true. Since the 1980’s, the Berlinale has established itself as a platform for contemporary Chinese cinema, which is another reason why we are greatly honoured that Wong Kar Wai will be presiding the International Jury 2013,” says Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick.
“I am truly honoured by Dieter’s invite. I am also very happy to return to Berlin and see the latest work of filmmakers from all over the world. It would be a fulfilling experience for any cineaste,” comments Wong Kar Wai.

Ce projet nommé 1905 devait réunir Tony Leung et Atsuko Maeda 前田敦子.

Sola Aoi 蒼井空 /蒼井そら est une actrice japonaise d'AV les plus connues en Asie.

http://www.weibo.com/u/1739928273?from=otherprofile&wvr=3.6&loc=guibo

Des vedettes comme Sheren Tang 鄧萃雯 ou Damian Lau 劉松仁 ont condamné ses actes dans leurs blogs.

Cheung Wing Hou et Jenny Lau ont été invités au talk-show people The Scoop 東張西望 pour donner leurs versions des faits... et faire la paix en direct.

Anthony Wong 黃秋生 asks Show Luo’s  羅志祥 fans to let him off

The actor also mocked the fans who created trouble for him and the singer in Cantonese slang

Jay Chou's and Show Luo's fans got embroiled in an online scuffle when some self-professed fans of the former insulted Show. Hong Kong actor Anthony Wong who is also Jay's godfather got implicated in this incident after he asked on his microblog, "Who's Show Luo?"

Since the news got out, Show has expressed his apologies twice to the actor on behalf of his fans but these fans continued to slam Anthony on his microblog.

On Monday night, Anthony suddenly asked "to be let off the hook" on his microblog. He wrote: "Please leave. I've said many times, I didn't know who Show Luo was, but now I do. It's Xiao Zhu [Show's nickname]. He is a big star, a dancing king, is an idol, please let us both off! He apologized to me twice, I didn't know who he was, but because of people like you guys, he had to apologize to me out of the blue. Go away!"

As his original entry contained vulgarities, Show's fans felt that the actor was insincere and continued to bash Anthony through his microblog.

Responding to the backlash, the 50-year-old actor posted another entry on his microblog on Tuesday morning, using Cantonese slang to mock the troublemakers.

Anthony wrote, "I remembered when I was young, there's a type of people call 'troublemakers' and they are usually cons, perverts or thieves. They will make a mountain out of a molehill and they had been gone for more than 10 years. Recently, they once again appear on microblogs and they are youths."

With regards to the incident, Show's manager expressed that the singer "protected his mother and apologized to Anthony. Therefore, he will not make any more comments."

Former Softcore Porn Star Is China’s Hottest New Politician

At a time when Chinese officials are burning up social media sites with their appearances in amateur sex tapes, a professional is making waves with a move into politics.

Actress Diana Pang 彭丹, well known in Hong Kong for starring roles films like 1997’s “Erotic Ghost Story – Perfect Match,” caused a stir online after reporters spotted her attending a local meeting of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Congress (CPPCC), a legislative advisory body, in the western Chinese province of Gansu this week.

The 40 year old, famous for her full figure, chose to partake in the meetings because she was interested in doing more work in the province, according to a report appearing on the website of the state-run China News Service (in Chinese).

“I hope I can do a little investment in Gansu, and shoot more film and TV programs featuring Gansu – especially mainstream programs,” the report quoted Ms. Pang as saying.

In a video interview (in Chinese)posted to the China News Service website, she explained that her attraction to mainstream movies – a term than in China typically refers to patriotic period films – stems from her family background. “I was born into a Red Army family,” she said. “My grandfather was vice mayor of Zunyi and I used to listen to him tell stories about the Long March.”

News that Gansu was playing host to Ms. Pang, known as Peng Dan in mainland China, produced a gush of responses on Sina Corp.’s Weibo microblogging service, including no shortage of ribald commentary linking Ms. Pang with a series of officials whose illicit bedroom exploits have gone viral in recent months.
“Peng Dan might work hand-in-hand with mainland officials to welcome.gif in the New Year by recording a 12-second film that challenges Lei Zhengfu’s record,” wrote one salty microblogger.

Lei Zhengfu was Communist Party chief of a district in the megacity of Chongqing who was sacked late last year after explicit video footage of him having sex with a woman many years his junior was uploaded to the Internet. A number of commentators, noting the short duration of the video, mocked Mr. Lei’s stamina – though to be fair, the footage in question started in media res, making it difficult to say with certainty how long the act lasted.

“These days transcending boundaries is very popular,” wrote another Sina Weibo user. “If politician Lei Zhengfu can act in a porn film, then Category III actress Peng Dan can certainly get involved in politics.”
In the Hong Kong film ratings system, “Category III” refers to films limited to audiences 18 years or older, typically because of their sexual content.

Ms. Pan, who stopped appearing in Category III films in the late 1990s, is not the first retired sex film star to make a splash by getting involved in public affairs. In September, former Japanese porn star Sola Aoi sent Chinese social media users into a tizzy by calling for friendship between Chinese and Japanese people amid rising tensions over a set of disputed islands in the East China Sea.

Though Ms. Pang is moving deeper into politics than Ms. Aoi, she could fare better in the relatively conservative court of Chinese public opinion from having been born in central China’s Hunan province and having a far less raunchy oeuvre. Though prolific, Ms. Pang has never acted in the sort of hard-core pornography that made Ms. Aoi famous.

At least one Hong Kong resident rose to Ms. Pang’s defense on Thursday. “Not a big deal,” public relations executive Felix Poon wrote in a post on Sina Weibo. “She isn’t the first artist to enter the CPPCC circle. The movies she made were her job and it was one way to seek success—there’s nothing here to criticize.”

Hong Kong’s scandal-fueled Apple Daily newspaper was less kind, running a salacious full-page story, complete with various images emphasizing Ms. Pang’s bust, under a headline that proclaimed: “China’s CPPCC is once again reduced to an international joke!”

Ms. Pang couldn’t immediately be reached for comment, though she left a message on her verified Sina Weibo account that reads like a response to the criticisms her political ambitions have unleashed. “Whether you like me or not, I’m always here.

Though you never cared, I never left. Life is long – Why rush to judge?”

Anthony Wong Chau Sang 黃秋生 défie les fans du chanteur taiwanais Show Lo/Luo 羅志祥.

On va régler ça concrètement.

China Appoints Jackie Chan to Top Political Advisory Body

3:58 AM PST 2/1/2013 by Clarence Tsui

After courting controversy in recent months for nationalistic outbursts, the actor earns a seat in the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

HONG KONG -- With his latest film CZ12 winning a string of weekends at the Chinese box office and eventually becoming the second highest-grossing domestic production ever in the country, Jackie Chan has started 2013 with a bang. And his political fortunes have risen as well.

The 58-year-old actor is now officially a member of the Chinese political establishment as a national-level delegate of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, one of the country's top political advisory bodies.
According to various news outlets in his native Hong Kong, Chan's name was on a final approved list of new appointees to the body, which begins its new four-year term in March.

STORY: New York Times: 'We Were Attacked by Chinese Hackers'

While members of the group do not wield outright power like their peers in the law-making National People’s Congress, appointment is akin to a symbolic stamp of approval from the political elite in Beijing.

Chan’s appointment comes as no surprise to China watchers, given the way he has grown increasingly vocal in making patriotic statements. Last month, Chan was widely criticized by the Hong Kong media when, being interviewed by a mainland Chinese publication, he called for the city’s authorities to draw legislation “to decide what one can demonstrate about, and what one cannot.” The statements were in response to street protests in Hong Kong against Mainland China's meddling in local affairs. Hong Kong is officially part of China, but maintains its own legal and economic systems, and a free press.

STORY: Jackie Chan Calls for Curbs on Political Freedom in Hong Kong

Earlier this month, Chan said in another interview that the United States “is the biggest corrupt country” in the world.

What concerns the Chinese public more, however, is how Chan would fulfill his responsibilities. There has been much debate about Chinese showbusiness figures being given official political roles over the past few weeks, an issue brought to the fore when Kung Fu Hustle star Stephen Chow Sing-shi -- who was appointed to a provincial arm of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference -- sent his secretary to pick up his accreditation, missed the first two days of meetings and only turned up for one morning session before taking leave again. Chinese social media users criticized the actor's less than diligent approach to his new role.

Chow is currently touring the country to promote the February release of his comeback film JTTW. The actor's publicists said in a statement that he had explained his absence from meetings to the political body's leadership in advance.

LOS ANGELES – At a packed press conference to promote an upcoming adaptation of the bestselling novel Memoirs of a Gay Tsar, lead actor Jackie Chan stunned the assembled press by coming out as a homosexual.

"I'm 59 years old. I have a son (as far as I'm aware). I'm Chinese. I'm gay," said Chan, adding, "all those years of pretending to kiss and cuddle my female co-workers in public can now be put to rest."

Chan, who is known for such allegorical movies as Who Am I? and The Forbidden Kingdom, has been a respectable figure in the field for his insistence in performing all pratfalls by himself – well into his advancing years.

With his surprise declaration, which some industry observers described as a publicity stunt to mask over his movie's problematic casting, Chan became the first openly gay martial arts star in the Chinese film industry.

The actor's bold move followed the coming out by alternative musician Anthony Wong last year. "To see a tough guy like Chau-sang do that… it has really inspired me," said Chan, who then burst out singing, presumably as a form of celebration.

It remains unclear if Chan had further elaborated on his philosophy after the surprise performance. At the time of press, we hadn't yet found a journalist who had stayed until the end of the song, generally believed to be Born This Way.
