Former Softcore Porn Star Is China’s Hottest New Politician
At a time when Chinese officials are burning up social media sites with their appearances in amateur sex tapes, a professional is making waves with a move into politics.
Actress Diana Pang 彭丹, well known in Hong Kong for starring roles films like 1997’s “Erotic Ghost Story – Perfect Match,” caused a stir online after reporters spotted her attending a local meeting of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Congress (CPPCC), a legislative advisory body, in the western Chinese province of Gansu this week.
The 40 year old, famous for her full figure, chose to partake in the meetings because she was interested in doing more work in the province, according to a report appearing on the website of the state-run China News Service (in Chinese).
“I hope I can do a little investment in Gansu, and shoot more film and TV programs featuring Gansu – especially mainstream programs,” the report quoted Ms. Pang as saying.
In a video interview (in Chinese)posted to the China News Service website, she explained that her attraction to mainstream movies – a term than in China typically refers to patriotic period films – stems from her family background. “I was born into a Red Army family,” she said. “My grandfather was vice mayor of Zunyi and I used to listen to him tell stories about the Long March.”
News that Gansu was playing host to Ms. Pang, known as Peng Dan in mainland China, produced a gush of responses on Sina Corp.’s Weibo microblogging service, including no shortage of ribald commentary linking Ms. Pang with a series of officials whose illicit bedroom exploits have gone viral in recent months. “Peng Dan might work hand-in-hand with mainland officials to in the New Year by recording a 12-second film that challenges Lei Zhengfu’s record,” wrote one salty microblogger.
Lei Zhengfu was Communist Party chief of a district in the megacity of Chongqing who was sacked late last year after explicit video footage of him having sex with a woman many years his junior was uploaded to the Internet. A number of commentators, noting the short duration of the video, mocked Mr. Lei’s stamina – though to be fair, the footage in question started in media res, making it difficult to say with certainty how long the act lasted.
“These days transcending boundaries is very popular,” wrote another Sina Weibo user. “If politician Lei Zhengfu can act in a porn film, then Category III actress Peng Dan can certainly get involved in politics.” In the Hong Kong film ratings system, “Category III” refers to films limited to audiences 18 years or older, typically because of their sexual content.
Ms. Pan, who stopped appearing in Category III films in the late 1990s, is not the first retired sex film star to make a splash by getting involved in public affairs. In September, former Japanese porn star Sola Aoi sent Chinese social media users into a tizzy by calling for friendship between Chinese and Japanese people amid rising tensions over a set of disputed islands in the East China Sea.
Though Ms. Pang is moving deeper into politics than Ms. Aoi, she could fare better in the relatively conservative court of Chinese public opinion from having been born in central China’s Hunan province and having a far less raunchy oeuvre. Though prolific, Ms. Pang has never acted in the sort of hard-core pornography that made Ms. Aoi famous.
At least one Hong Kong resident rose to Ms. Pang’s defense on Thursday. “Not a big deal,” public relations executive Felix Poon wrote in a post on Sina Weibo. “She isn’t the first artist to enter the CPPCC circle. The movies she made were her job and it was one way to seek success—there’s nothing here to criticize.”
Hong Kong’s scandal-fueled Apple Daily newspaper was less kind, running a salacious full-page story, complete with various images emphasizing Ms. Pang’s bust, under a headline that proclaimed: “China’s CPPCC is once again reduced to an international joke!”
Ms. Pang couldn’t immediately be reached for comment, though she left a message on her verified Sina Weibo account that reads like a response to the criticisms her political ambitions have unleashed. “Whether you like me or not, I’m always here. Though you never cared, I never left. Life is long – Why rush to judge?”

Anthony Wong Chau Sang 黃秋生 défie les fans du chanteur taiwanais Show Lo/Luo 羅志祥.
On va régler ça concrètement.

China Appoints Jackie Chan to Top Political Advisory Body
3:58 AM PST 2/1/2013 by Clarence Tsui
After courting controversy in recent months for nationalistic outbursts, the actor earns a seat in the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
HONG KONG -- With his latest film CZ12 winning a string of weekends at the Chinese box office and eventually becoming the second highest-grossing domestic production ever in the country, Jackie Chan has started 2013 with a bang. And his political fortunes have risen as well.
The 58-year-old actor is now officially a member of the Chinese political establishment as a national-level delegate of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, one of the country's top political advisory bodies. According to various news outlets in his native Hong Kong, Chan's name was on a final approved list of new appointees to the body, which begins its new four-year term in March.
STORY: New York Times: 'We Were Attacked by Chinese Hackers'
While members of the group do not wield outright power like their peers in the law-making National People’s Congress, appointment is akin to a symbolic stamp of approval from the political elite in Beijing.
Chan’s appointment comes as no surprise to China watchers, given the way he has grown increasingly vocal in making patriotic statements. Last month, Chan was widely criticized by the Hong Kong media when, being interviewed by a mainland Chinese publication, he called for the city’s authorities to draw legislation “to decide what one can demonstrate about, and what one cannot.” The statements were in response to street protests in Hong Kong against Mainland China's meddling in local affairs. Hong Kong is officially part of China, but maintains its own legal and economic systems, and a free press.
STORY: Jackie Chan Calls for Curbs on Political Freedom in Hong Kong
Earlier this month, Chan said in another interview that the United States “is the biggest corrupt country” in the world.
What concerns the Chinese public more, however, is how Chan would fulfill his responsibilities. There has been much debate about Chinese showbusiness figures being given official political roles over the past few weeks, an issue brought to the fore when Kung Fu Hustle star Stephen Chow Sing-shi -- who was appointed to a provincial arm of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference -- sent his secretary to pick up his accreditation, missed the first two days of meetings and only turned up for one morning session before taking leave again. Chinese social media users criticized the actor's less than diligent approach to his new role.
Chow is currently touring the country to promote the February release of his comeback film JTTW. The actor's publicists said in a statement that he had explained his absence from meetings to the political body's leadership in advance.

LOS ANGELES – At a packed press conference to promote an upcoming adaptation of the bestselling novel Memoirs of a Gay Tsar, lead actor Jackie Chan stunned the assembled press by coming out as a homosexual.
"I'm 59 years old. I have a son (as far as I'm aware). I'm Chinese. I'm gay," said Chan, adding, "all those years of pretending to kiss and cuddle my female co-workers in public can now be put to rest."
Chan, who is known for such allegorical movies as Who Am I? and The Forbidden Kingdom, has been a respectable figure in the field for his insistence in performing all pratfalls by himself – well into his advancing years.
With his surprise declaration, which some industry observers described as a publicity stunt to mask over his movie's problematic casting, Chan became the first openly gay martial arts star in the Chinese film industry.
The actor's bold move followed the coming out by alternative musician Anthony Wong last year. "To see a tough guy like Chau-sang do that… it has really inspired me," said Chan, who then burst out singing, presumably as a form of celebration.
It remains unclear if Chan had further elaborated on his philosophy after the surprise performance. At the time of press, we hadn't yet found a journalist who had stayed until the end of the song, generally believed to be Born This Way.
