Cape No7 / 海角七號

Un film taiwanais de Wei Te-shen / Wei De Sheng / 魏德聖

Avec :
Ma Nien Hsien /馬念先
Liang Wen Yin /梁文音
Fan I Chen /范逸臣
Lin Hsiao Pei /林曉培
Chung Hsiao Chieh /中孝介
Chie Tanaka /田中千繪

This is Wei's first feature length film, following his success with Seediq Bale, the tale of an indigenous Taiwanese hero. "Cape No.7" had a sizable NT$50 million budget and is one of only two Taiwanese entries into the International category. There are several big names in the cast including local pop stars Fan Yi-Chen and Liang Wen-yin, and Japanese stars Kouseke Atari and Tanaka Chie.

Set in the southern coastal town of Hengchun, Pintung County, "Cape No. 7" follows the fortunes of vocalist A-chia, a local boy who has returned to Hengchun after a tough time up in the big smoke of Taipei City. A-chia starts work as a mailman, where he comes across a mysterious love letter written 60 years earlier and yet to be delivered.

Meanwhile a former Japanese model stranded in Hengchun decides to put on a live event. A-chia's stepfather decides to get a band together with his stepson and five other local residents to enter the concert. The film follows their preparations in a multi-layered story.

The online English synopsis seems to indicate that they will enjoy sucess in their endevours, and rock out as they do so:
"Seven people, who were not expected to be great or anything, formed this impossible band. At the moment the sun sank into the ocean, they performed passionately and feverishly as if they had no past and no future. On this long lost land and ocean, at this very moment of their seemingly meaningless life, they created a legend of Hengchun."

Local comedy Cape No. 7 tops Taiwanese box office
Stephen Cremin in Taipei
08 Sep 2008 11:13

On its third weekend on release, Wei Te-sheng's character comedy Cape No. 7 is the first local film in six years to climb to the top of the Taipei box office charts.

Over the three-day weekend, the film grossed $240,000 representing a 77% boost on last weekend's numbers. It leap-frogged You Don't Mess With The Zohan and Mama Mia!, which dropped by 64% and 45% respectively.

Including preview screenings, Cape No. 7 has now grossed $660,000 making it the highest grossing local film of 2008 ahead of Kung Fu Dunk's score of $500,000 over the lucrative Chinese New Year holidays.

While Ang Lee's Lust, Caution held the number one spot at the Taipei box office for four consecutive weeks in 2007, the spy thriller isn't considered a local film by international standards. Chen Kuo-fu's supernatural thriller Double Vision topped the box office for two consecutive weeks in October 2002.

Highest new entry of the week was another local film from a first-time director, Gilles Yang's Orz Boyz! The melodrama about the adventures of two rebellious schoolboys grossed a respectable $48,000 on seven screens in Taipei.

Orz Boyz! , which premiered at the Hong Kong International Film Festival in March, announced on the eve of release that it had sold broadcasting rights to NHK Television in Japan. The film is distributed in Taiwan in partnership with Warner Bros.

Noting the importance of word-of-mouth for local releases, executive producer Ma Tien-tsung told Screendaily: "We did extensive screening before the official release and had great responses from audiences".

HONG KONG – "Cape No. 7" a debut feature by helmer Wei Te-sheng, has secured Taiwan's nomination as the territory's contender for the foreign-language Oscar, according to local reports.

The film's producers were informed of their nomination by the Motion Picture & Drama Association of Taiwan.

Pic, about the rise of a small town rock band and the discovery of a cache of undelivered love letters from 60 years ago, is a celebration of all things Taiwanese delving into themes of generational divides, cultural disparity and small town ennui. In June it was selected as the opening film of the 10th Taipei Film Festival, where it won the jury prize and an audience award.

Int'l sales of the pic, handled by Good Films Workshop, are skedded to get underway at next month's Asian Film Market in Pusan.
